The Pawn (The Patrick Bowers Files #1) by Steven James

Review by Judy

Another formulaic serial killer novel but with a few unexpected twists and turns. Seeking the killer is Pat Bowers a special agent working for the FBI’s ‘National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime’ when he isn’t on the lecture circuit. He is trying to overcome a personal tragedy and also trying to build bridges with his daughter, Tessa alongside finding a particularly nasty killer who calls himself ‘The Illusionist’. The personal story adds to the commentary and adds spice to the storyline.

There is the sceptical policewoman, a bit of a ball-breakers by all accounts; a long term professional partner; a fellow profiler and, of course, many bodies. The story is set in North Carolina in the area around Ashville and in the Appalachians. The discriptions of the scenery are very atmospheric and on the whole the story is well written. It certainly keeps you guessing even though the killer seems to be introduced in the prologue.

Recommended if you are into this sort of story.

5/5
