Anathema (Cloud Prophet Trilogy #1)

Review by Kaitlin

Hi! This is my first review, so let’s see how it goes!

Anathema by Megg Jensen is a book about a society very different from our own. It features people who are “gifted” with magical abilities and civil divisions between “race” and between masters and slaves. These two main plot points were what drove the novel.

With two very large plot points, the novel had a very fast pace driving it. I found parts of the novel to be very predictable, but backstabbing abounds and it did keep me guessing until the end. There were quite a few surprises for even the most seasoned reader.

The book kept me interested and engaged due to its fast pace and strong setting and descriptions. I had a very easy time visualizing exactly what the author wrote. I also related well to the characters. Since the book was so short, it really left me wanting more (it is the first in a trilogy). I am unsure as to if I would read it again (I generally re-read my favorite books), but I would definitely consider the sequel.

My only complaint with this book is it seems rather similar to *Graceling *and *Fire* by Kristin Cashore. These novels also featured magical people who were enslaved by royals.

I would give *Anathema* 3/5 stars. It was a quick read, engaging, and pretty entertaining.
