Serena is the heroine of Love’s Captive. When I was trying to create the woman who would capture King Rhamus’ heart, I knew she had to be special, and of course beautiful because she has to gain the attention of a King. She also had to be tall because the warriors are 7’ and over, so Serena is over 6’ tall.

But I also wanted her to be tough; a fighter. The people of Volarn are a warrior race, and Serena needed to be a person who was respected for her strength. Later in the story, her fighting ability was a pivotal point with warrior Princess Kasha, when Serena finally won Kasha’s respect by showing her skills at defending herself.

Finally, I wanted Serena’s fighting skills to be different, something the Volarnians had never seen; therefore I made her a female wrestler. It didn’t make sense to have Serena proficient in swords. The Volarnians are masters of the sword and trained from the time they are little. How could an Earth woman match those skills?

I chose not to make the heroine a martial arts expert because the Volarn warriors have their own type of hand-to-hand fighting techniques. It would seem a bit implausible that a smaller female could overcome one of the warriors, even with martial arts training.

But, with her wrestling knowledge Serena was able to throw a huge warrior over her shoulder by using her Judo-like skills.

When Serena awakes, after a close and unpleasant encounter with some sort of stun gun, she very quickly learns that resistance is futile and escape only a yearned for dream. She, and the other Earth women Serena meets aboard ship with her, have been captured by the Moyds, interstellar merchants ..their mission, to procure fertile wives for the men of Volarn, where their race is endangered due to the wide-spread sterility of their own women. Learning this is at least some relief to the captured women, but Serena is disgusted to realize that they are nothing in these men’s eyes but baby makers. Regardless, she knows she has no choice but to face the fate that awaits her with as much dignity as she can muster. Once they arrive on Volarn, Serena learns that her assessment has not been entirely accurate. Using their power crystals in the Tarthra Ritual, the warriors approach the women with their crystals to find the mate most suited to them..a woman to love who can love them. Serena is chosen to become King Rhamus’ queen, but, just as she feels herself weakening to Rhamus’ romantic, passionate nature, Rhamus’ enemy, Xarath, abducts her. Rating: Contains explicit sex, graphic language and some violence.
