Topic: Connecting with Readers

Most authors will tell you that writing is a solitary profession. That works for me because I enjoy being alone with my thoughts, but as a writer, there’s nothing better than connecting with readers or other writers who share your passion for the written word.

There are only so many hours in a day, and I have to balance my career with my commitment to my husband and son, so I choose how I spend my non-writing time very carefully. I’ve always been reluctant to devote a lot of time to social networking because I know it can easily erode your ‘free time’, of which I have very little. To put it into perspective, I had to limit my TV watching to a few hours per week so I could meet the other demands on my time, so when my writer friends continued to preach about the importance of Facebook , Twitter, and Goodreads to connect with readers, I resisted. Not because I didn’t want to open the lines of communication with my readers, I did, but I knew it would require a lot of time and effort that might take away from my other priorities.

I’ve used Facebook as a social networking tool for years, but I used it occasionally, when I felt I needed a break.
